All the asanas are carried out slowly and smoothly, avoiding all rush and strain. Each of the asanas is maintained for a few minutes (or however long feels comfortable), and then gently and slowly released and followed by a brief period of relaxation in a neutral position before the next asana is assumed. At all times, students are reminded of the importance of concentration and shown how to breathe slowly, regularly and deeply in a way that coordinates with the type of asana(s) being used. There are also specific yoga breathing techniques to employ, such as "alternate nostril breathing", which are usually taught as independent exercises.

The asanas are better demonstrated than described, and depending on how supple the student is, some are bound to be either impossible or uncomfortable initially, but it is surprising how quickly many aerobically unfit, stiff and overweight people become competent. A yoga instruction manual written 1,300 years ago states that an asana has been mastered when it can be followed naturally and effortlessly. Asanas are also combined by many practitioners with visualization (a clear and deliberate image in the mind's eye of a thing or process you wish to bring about) and affirmations (positively phrased statements you wish to become true), particularly when healing benefits need to be directed at specific body areas or systems.

Health author Mark Bricklin, writer of "The Practical Encyclopedia of Natural Healing" (Rodale Press), said of yoga: "If you practice yoga postures, you are strengthening the body. If you control your breathing, you are creating a chemical and emotional balance. If you concentrate your mind in affirmations, you are practicing the power of prayer. But if you synthesize all three, you are entering the most powerful mystery of healing: the basic harmony of life."
